Songs of Farewell
Friday25 May 2018 at 7.00pm
(Pre-concert event introducing the new pieces at 6.45pm)
A concert to commemorate the end of World War I, featuring Sir Hubert Parry's evocative Songs of Farewell and five new commissions.
Composed towards the end of Parry's life during the Great War, the highly expressive Songs of Farewell represent a summation of Parry's musical life. Parry’s love of English renaissance madrigals and partsongs shines through, as well as the rich influence on him of foreign composers, such as Brahms. For this concert, Parry’s songs will be interlaced with five world premières of works by Irish composers, which in turn explore themes of life and death, immortality and transcendence.
